Some states require you to read and write English fluently, and certain states will allow residents of neighboring states to become notaries.

  • The cost to become a notary varies and can be less than $100 in certain states to several hundred dollars in others. Make sure you confirm the fee to submit your application to become a notary as well as additional training, exams, supplies, and the cost of background screenings when applicable.

  • Depending on the state, some notary license requirements include a background check. If you have a misdemeanor or felony on your record, you may not qualify.

  • You will also need certain supplies including certificates, a stamping seal, and a journal so that you can keep track and thorough records of all of your notarizations. This isn’t required in every state, but it’s still a good idea to have one.
